That From The Book of Revelation, Yes?

"And I suspect that what you'll see, Toby, is that there will be a momentum, momentum will be gathered. Houses will begat jobs, jobs will begat houses."
— George W. Bush, talking to reporters along the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast, Gulfport, MS, August 28, 2006

The idea of houses begatting — the mental image, really — instills a sense of terror in me.

something I want to hear someone say during the campaign [Aug. 28th, 2008|10:49 am]

[music |"Mission Temple Fireworks Stand" by Paul Thorn]

I really don't understand why the Democrats aren't pounding on the fact that the right-wing bluster about how they'll keep us safer is so much bullshit, because 9.11 happened on the Republicans' watch. I was very glad to hear Senator Biden last night point out that the fighting in Afghanistan was the actual response to 9.11 and Iraq has nothing to do with it. We're coming up on seven years since we were attacked by al-Qaeda and President Bush declared Osama bin Laden public enemy #1. Speaking as a resident of the city that bore the brunt of that attack, I'm wondering what the fuck happened.

I also wish Senator Clinton had been more explicit in pointing out that the last time a Democrat was in the White House we had peace and prosperity......

Houston, We Have a Potential Happy Ending [Aug. 27th, 2008|10:49 pm]

[mood |Almost completely relieved....]

I have been amazed by the outpouring of puppy support and encouragement. And most importantly I have a firm offer to take the puppy -- by someone local! This is beyond my wildest hopes. Details tomorrow. In addition to that, I had a phone call from someone in Seattle who was interested in finding out more (concerned whether puppy might be a lab/pit bull mix, which is a bit of a shame as there is nothing wrong with the pit bull breed, plus lab in the mix mitigates so, so much), plus a potential lead from a couple in New Mexico. All that remains is for me to talk to the firm-offer person tomorrow, to let her know that....

....the vet told us today that the puppy is anemic, enough that they have to put off the spay surgery for at least three days while they try to boost her up a bit. This is probably simply diet or flea-related, and hopefully not indicative of any other problems. I can't imagine this will deter the firm-offer person (I'm way too tired to think of better phrasing, alas), especially as we intend to cover all costs up to the moment when she takes puppy ownership, but I want to get all our ducks in a row and be completely up front about everything.

The vet's office really, really wanted a name to call the puppy, so I picked Sasha, but I'm not telling our friend who wants her. This will be her puppy to name. :-)

After a fun day that included lunch with friends, picking up the copy edit of A Singular Destiny, getting copies of both Supernatural: Bone Key and the new Star Trek Magazine with my defense of the third season of TOS, and picking up and depositing a desperately needed check, I joined [info]girasole, [info]helgabee, and the Infomancer at Partners & Crime Mystery Booksellers in Greenwich Village for a reading and signing by Deborah Grabien [info]debg for her new novel Rock and Roll Never Forgets, the first book in a mystery series about an aging rock star, which I'm eagerly looking forward to diving into. (Deb's "Haunted Ballads" series is also most excellent.)

Aiding Deb was actor Michael Boatman, whom you might recall from Spin City and Arli$$, and an actor whom I've been fond of since his time on The Jackie Thomas Show. Mike and I got to talk a bit, and it turns out he's an author as well, and also a big ol' geek. *grin*

I gave him my card, and with luck, we'll stay in touch. Always nice when the people whose work you admire turn out to be cool folks.....

Oh, Yeah?

"I don't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees."
— George W. Bush, September 1, 2005, three days after the breach.

Exhibit A: Gov. Kathleen Blanco said in a CNN interview on August 27 that the storm could bring a 15- to 20-foot surge of water and the people of New Orleans "will not survive that if indeed it happens."

Exhibit B: Federal disaster officials warned Bush and his homeland security chief during the August 28 session "the storm could breach levees."

Exhibit C: New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin told a new conference on August 29: "The storm surge most likely will topple our levee system."

Exhibit D: FEMA Director Brown testified that prior to the disaster "in my conversations with the president and with the chief of staff; our concern was always the breach of the levees."

Let's not forget. Bush strummed a guitar while New Orleans drowned.

About Alaska [Aug. 27th, 2008|02:15 pm]

scavgraphics
Right wing caricature and walking ethics violation Ted Stevens won the primary in his goal to be re-elected to the Senate.

Was there no one else for the Alaskan Republicans to run against him?

No walruses who are into offshore drilling?
No moose who are opposed to the estate tax?
No polar bears who think global warming is a leftist hoax?
No caribou opposed to gay Eskimos getting married (not that that should be an issue)?

Hopefully the Dems have found an alternative energy promoting seal to run in the general.

Update to the update [Aug. 27th, 2008|11:32 am]

[mood | anxious]

[I edited my previous entry, but am re-posting the latest just in case.]

The shelter has informed us that unless we make arrangements for the puppy today by 3:30 p.m. she will be moved "somewhere" due to the potential hurricane and we and they lose all control over what happens to her.

This afternoon I am going to pay the adoption fee and fill out paperwork to release her directly to our vet -- it turns out the only way the shelter will allow us to do this is THEY transfer the puppy directly to the vet, and she is spayed tomorrow, so that's what we're doing. We will then pay to board her at our vet's office temporarily. They're being very accommodating in scheduling all these last minute arrangements. However, this is a stop-gap solution and we're not sure how long we can afford the boarding.

Also thanks to those who have offered suggestions and encouragement. Unfortunately, the rescue group leads I followed up on have not panned out. Everyone is overwhelmed.

Just got a call from my agent telling me a check has arrived, which is a good frapping thing, because thanks to credit-card foolishness, our ability to pay for the Dragon*Con hotel was in a bit of doubt. But now all is well. *whew*

I'm also seriously pissed off at my credit-card company right now. My card expired in July, but I never got a replacement. I found out Monday that they no longer ship cards to PO boxes (which is my billing address for that card). They didn't tell me this, they just didn't send the card. Feh. So they sent a new one, but it's an open question as to whether or not it'll get here before [info]helgabee takes me to the airport tomorrow.

But all is well.

Off to do 50 other things, culminating in [info]debg's signing tonight.

And a puppy update [Aug. 27th, 2008|09:39 am]

amysisson
[mood | anxious]

I'm going to make this as short as I can, because the more time I think about it, the more migraine-inducing stress I feel.

The puppy has not yet been adopted. The shelter called to say she is becoming slightly ill, and might we come back to get her? I suspect this is merely kennel cough which by itself is No Big Deal, but since they are very unlikely to adopt out a sick puppy, it becomes potentially life-threatening since they do euthanize if they run out of space.

Paul is in Arizona (he gets home tonight), but last night on the phone he said he would call the shelter and our vet this morning, and see if we can pick up the puppy tomorrow (Thursday), take her directly to our vet for a check-up, and pay to board her there temporarily. This isn't great timing money-wise, as one of our cats has a $700-800 appointment for minor (!) procedures next week, but in the end it is just money.

Hopefully the vet will say yes, but even so, we do still need to find a home for the puppy as quickly as possible. This is NOT limited to the Houston area. We will drive this puppy wherever we have to to find her a home. So if you know anyone anywhere in Texas, or Louisiana, or Oklahoma, or wherever, who would be willing to take this puppy, we will get her there at our expense. Please ask everyone you think might even remotely be interested. As a reminder, this is a Black Lab or Black Lab mix, female, estimated 3-4 months old.

Please feel free to re-post or e-mail any or all of this post. Thanks!

Edited to add (and also posted anew just in case someone doesn't see this addendum):

Long story short, the shelter has informed us that unless we make arrangements for the puppy today by 3:30 p.m. she will be moved "somewhere" due to the potential hurricane and we and they lose all control over what happens to her.

This afternoon I am going to pay the adoption fee and fill out paperwork to release her directly to our vet -- it turns out the only way the shelter will allow us to do this is THEY transfer the puppy directly to the vet, and she is spayed tomorrow, so that's what we're doing. On John McCain’s Space Policy [Aug. 27th, 2008|11:15 am]
allyngibson

Two weeks ago I wrote that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama was reconsidering his campaign’s space policy — his education plan was funded by taking money from NASA (and the development of Constellation, the follow-up to the Shuttle) and diverting it into elementary education. Obama had begun to make noises that he was going to continue funding NASA, perhaps even increase its funding.

Constellation is a smidge important. The Space Shuttle fleet is being retired in 2010. Constellation would not come online until 2015 at the earliest, leaving the United States dependent upon Russia for ferrying astronauts and supplies to the International Space Station.

Obama’s presumptive opponent, Republican John McCain has a plan.

He just wants to keep flying the Shuttle.

Is that really a plan? Is that really even feasible?

No. And absosmurfly not.

McCain’s reasoning makes sense — in the aftermath of Georgia, McCain feels that the United States cannot trust Georgia — but it’s a plan that defies practicality and feasibility.

One, the Shuttles cannot last forever. That’s why the United States needs to develop something to take their place.

Two, some Shuttle components are already beyond their rated lifespans. The RCS propellant tanks, for instance, had a twenty-year lifespan. Twenty years passed eight or nine years ago.

Three, spending the money to keep the shuttles flying in the short term keeps NASA from developing Constellation in a timely basis over the long-term, unless McCain is planning on throwing money at NASA to do both.

I understand that McCain wants to play tough with Russia. I understand that McCain wants a new “Cold War” so he can be as bellicose with Russia as Bush was with Iraq.

But like Bush and Iraq, bellicosity leads to stupid and ill-thought policy decisions. Decisions that will get people killed and don’t move us forward.

McCain’s space policy, like McCain himself, is nothing but a relic of a time that’s passed.

The script for the first issue of the Farscape comic (that issue is entitled "Return of the King") is done, and just awaiting Henson's final okay. I just tonight finished the script for #2 (entitled "Dungeons and Dominars") and sent it off to Rockne for his notes. (The titles for the other two issues are "Yes, That's Our Baby" and "Hynerian Rhapsody.")

I'm shooting to get the whole thing written in the next week or so in order to a) give Henson plenty of time, b) give Tommy enough time to draw the thing, and c) get it off my plate so I can move on to GWP2, the StarCraft: Ghost Academy script, and StarCraft: Ghost: Spectres.

Oh, and one of my other comics proposals was rejected. Feh.
